GenCore Hydrogen Powered Backup Distribution Generator

The PlugPower GenCore is a commercial PEM fuel cell system specifically designed for back-up power applications within the telecommunications industry.

This application, which requires highly reliable DC power, commonly uses lead-acid batteries as an uninterruptible power supply or UPS.

The GenCore fuel cell system provides an alternative to battery UPS systems, potentially offering a longer runtime and lower life-cycle costs.

The UPS application appears to be particularly well-suited for PEM fuel cells like the GenCore, because the application's low duty cycle requirement is consistent with the limited availability (i.e., high cost) of hydrogen fuel and with current stack durability limits of 1000-4000 hours for PEM systems recently tested by the Center.
